If you’re like most Americans, you probably grew up using Advil or other non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (also known as NSAIDs) whenever you felt minor aches and pains. Ironically, it should also be noted that taking these pills regularly can actually worsen the pain you’re trying to alleviate.

Some of the more common side effects include abdominal pain, nausea, pale skin, indigestion, diarrhea, bloating, and shortness of breath. Even looking at rare side effects like nosebleeds, muscle twitching, seizures, hair loss, and hostility can be enough to make someone second guess popping another Advil. 

Unfortunately, about a third of Americans are taking more than the recommended dose of NSAIDs because they believe it will increase their effectiveness. The FDA has issued a warning about using NSAIDs claiming that a large number of studies support the findings that they do in fact increase the risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

Although they can be safe when used as directed, Advil and other NSAIDs should really only be used as a last resort for pain relief.
